SSS INTERVIEW #005 THE GLITCH MOB [EN]

(INTERVIEWED DURING APRIL 2010)

#1 – Trivial question : The Glitch Mob, who is it, what is it ? How did you meet ?

We were all friends before we decided to start playing and making music together.

__________
#2 – The name of your band seems to be hinting to the « Glitch Hop » label often put on your work. Why is that ? And how would you qualify your music ?

When we came up with the name it was kind of a joke. We were booked for a festival in Northern California and needed to choose a name – someone said « Glitch Mob » and it just stuck. But we did not intend it to be tied to any genre. We don’t try to put any tags or genres on our music, even though we have the word glitch in our name. Whatever people want to call us is fine with us.

__________
#3 – You originally had a fourth member, Kraddy. What’s the reason behind his departure ? Did it changed anything to the Glitch Mob’s spirit ?

Our split with Kraddy came down to a lack of common vision and some creative differences.

__________
#4 – « Drink The Sea », your first album will be released the 25th of may. So far you only released remixes, why did you wait so long to release original Glitch Mob songs ?

It took us a long time to write the album because the way we work is very detailed and slow. It generally takes about a month per song.

__________
#5 – We saw with « Drive It Like You Stole It » and « Between The Points » a real departure from your typical work. Will this album be clearly different ? Will we see more featurings ?

The best way is to listen and find out. More than anything this time we wanted to focus on the listening experience more than the production techniques. We were really just trying to tell a story with the record.

__________
#6 – Let’s talk about your live sets a bit. Your new configuration for the tour associated with the album is quite impressive (Live drums and instruments…), in short a true live! Can you explain to us this choice ?

For this tour we really wanted to get out there and play the music. We all play various instruments and DJing and electronic performance has always been just a small part of our overall love for music. We enjoy coming up with new ways to perform music and push ourselves outside of our comfort zone. It’s also very important to us to have a fun, interactive show. Having physical instruments in addition to our electronic instruments was a good way to make it more exciting for the audience.

__________
#7 – Your music is regularly surrounded with an important graphic universe (live visual performances, video teasers …). What is in your opinion the importance of visual creation in music.

The visual element of music is very important. For us it is first and foremost a way into the music. It allows people another way to see or feel it, and helps set a tone that adds depth to the experience. We also just really enjoy collaborating with visual artists as a lot of inspiration can come from there.

__________
#8. – We noticed on your Facebook page that you offer a bulletin board to help budding producers, to whom you often respond in person which is quite rare. Does it seem important to you as artists to stay close to people to people who follow your work ?

It’s important to us to give back to our community in any way we can. Production advice is something that’s easy for us offer. We like to be very transparent in the process and keep no secrets. We are often also very inspired by the posts on the discussion forum.

__________
#9 – Recently a polemic around the complex matter of illegal downloads erupted, with majors crying on the rooftops that it is the reason behind the disk industry’s decline. Do you really think it has such an impact on artists and labels’s earnings ? What is your point of you on downloads ?

We are not afraid of illegal downloads. With the state of things right now, it’s a very conscious choice if someone wants to pay for music. If someone wants to send the music to all of their friends online — that’s a beautiful thing. It’s just easier to get the music heard that way. If people really feel like supporting there’s many ways to do it, including buying music or coming to a show.

__________
#10 – Any coming up projects for ediT, Boreta and Ooah ?

We’ll be on the road for a long time touring the record. Not sure when we’ll have time for anything else! Thanks.
